Liberica? Why Liberica?

Well, this species could be quite important to the future of specialty coffee. It’s extremely capable of handling extreme heat, and has a unique root structure that goes quite deep (it’s actually a pretty huge tree!). Fantastic for areas that might have long drought seasons.

So, what’s the specialty coffee potential here?

Since 2016, our importer 96B has been pioneering specialty Liberica coffee cultivation in Vietnam's remote Huong Hoa region. Located at 600 metres above sea level in Quang Tri province, this unique terroir boasts century-old Liberica cultivars, an ideal mean temperature of 25°C, and exceptional humidity.

Historically undervalued and sold as "pseudo-Arabica," these Liberica trees have been transformed through 96B's innovative approach. Working directly with progressive local farmers since 2022, they've elevated this variety through experimental processing methods, including the extended 120-hour anaerobic fermentation featured in this coffee. Ripe red cherries undergo 120 hours of dry fermentation, followed by a meticulous 30-day drying protocol.

This intensive processing method results in a fruit-forward cup with juicy notes of blueberry wine and lychee. The aroma delivers raisin and wine-like notes on the nose, while the mouthfeel leaves an incredibly long and lingering, sweet stevia-like aftertaste.

And it’s not just us nerding out on Liberica - two baristas used this variety at the 2025 World Barista Championship, proving that this unique species has some serious potential.
