Get to Know Dose Coffee

With Lemmie Green, Director of Coffee

Interview with Lemmie Green, Director of Coffee

We're so thrilled to finally get Dose Coffee into the pack—it's surely been a long time coming. While they do have a re-brand on the horizon, we know that their commitment to bringing good coffee to their community in a fun and inclusive way will remain unchanged. We sat down with Lemmie Green, Director of Coffee, to learn more about Dose Coffee's story.
If you had to describe Dose Coffee in three words, what three words would you use?
Fun, inclusive, and dynamic.
What is the story behind Dose Coffee?
John and Lauren, the owners, fell in love with Revelstoke after moving here in 2014. They opened the cafe on a shoestring budget in 2017 wanting to give back to the community that welcomed them with something they felt was missing in this small town–an Australian-inspired specialty coffee shop. It’s been a community hub ever since. We started with coffee from our friends Phil & Sebastian, Monogram, and other guest roasters, but two years ago the time felt right to start roasting for ourselves. They dangled the carrot for me to stick around and take on the head roaster position and I’m grateful for such an opportunity!
What do you love most about your job at Dose?
I love sample roasting and making green purchasing decisions. But, I’d say my favourite part of my job is actually opening the door on the destoner and releasing the beans of a finished roast into the bucket—it’s just so satisfying
How would you describe Dose’s mission and sourcing philosophy?
As a roastery our mission is to open the doorway to specialty coffee to all. The cafe has always been a friendly and inclusive hub for the community and we wanted to carry that into our roastery offering. Specialty coffee can be quite daunting and sometimes carries a stigma of exclusivity—we didn’t want to alienate anyone! We believe there is no wrong way to drink coffee and we want to showcase high quality, sustainably sourced, and well-roasted coffees to all coffee drinkers. Our core range is designed to be approachable and versatile—working on all brewing methods and drank black or with milk, and we keep our premium range constantly evolving!
We work with a small number of Canadian importers. They share our vision of providing an avenue to showcase the exceptional fruits of their producer partners’ labour in the Canadian market, ensuring they get paid properly at the same time. We look forward to establishing long-lasting purchasing relationships with these producers as we go forward.
What’s something exciting Dose is working on that we can look forward to in the near future?
We always have a few projects on the go! We just opened Alfred’s, which is our pop-up evening restaurant running out of the cafe and it’s been really well-received so far. On the coffee front, I’m actually stoked to get stuck into a new decaf coming to us soon from Francy Castillo and Apex Coffee Import’s ‘Mujeres de Berruecos’ project in Narino, Colombia. We’re so excited to share it with everybody!
